Open Burning Information

Open and agricultural burning is regulated and enforced by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Before burning, contact the Linn County Burn Line at 541-451-1904.  The number will connect you with an automated message that is updated daily and informs you whether or not burning is allowed.  For agricultural burning, you must call the Oregon Department of Agriculture Grower Hotline at 503-986-4755.

Burn season run from March 1st to June 15th and October 1st to December 15th. Beginning and ending dates are subject to change based on current fire conditions.

BURN COMPLAINTS

Unless there is an immediate threat to life or property, burn complaints during burn season should be made to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) at 888-997-7888. This includes complaints of burning illegal materials, burning on non-burn days, and more.

Burn complaints during Fire Season (summer) can be made through LCSO dispatch at 541-967-4333 and will be handled by the appropriate fire department or district.

MATERIALS THAT CANNOT BE BURNED AT ANY TIME
DEQ regulations prohibit open burning of the following materials at any time, anywhere in the state of Oregon:

  • Rubber products, including tires

  • Asbestos products

  • Animal remains

  • Plastic

  • Wet garbage

  • Petroleum and petroleum-treated debris

  • Asphalt or industrial waste

  • Any material that creates dense smoke or noxious odors

  • Auto parts and wire insulation

This means the use of a tire, gasoline, diesel and other like products to ignite a fire is also prohibited. To ignite, we recommend covering the pile (or part of it if it’s large) to keep it dry, then starting with paper and a match.
